Game
1: Lazers 6 - Oil Kings 3
Oil
Kings take the ice with a bunch of new players to take on the Lazers
who have the same team as last year. Lazers take early 3-0 lead
in first period but the Oil Kings battle back and tie it 3-3 early in
the third. With 5 minutes left, the Oil Kings get a powerplay
and a chance to take the lead but they give up not 1 but 2 shorthanded
goals to fall behind 5-3. The lazers added an empty-net goal to
wrap up the scoring for a 6-3 Lazer victory. In the lot after
the game, all we had was some warm Busch Light that Rob Hill brought
until Jim Piggot made a Rookie of the Year play and came back with
cold beer.
Game
2: Oil Kings 3 - Cavemen 2
In
a chippy, physical game, the Oil Kings took a 3-0 lead into the third
period and then held on for a 3-2 win. The Oil Kings goals
featured a nice give and go between Yorke and Creighton (I think) with
Yorke one-timing a missile past the glove of the Cavemen goalie into
the top-corner of the net. Big Derek got the game winner when
the Cavemen goalie tried to play a shot going over the net and the
puck hit his glove and dropped behind him into the net.
Game
3: Oil Kings 7 - Enforcers 5
In
a wide open game, the Oil Kings again held onto a third period lead
while under intense pressure to get their second win of the season
against the Enforcers. The Oil Kings, skating with 8 players,
dominated early and took a 6-3 lead into the third period and then
withstood the Enforcers furious comeback attempt before adding and
empty net goal in the final seconds. Key Play: With the score
6-5 Oil Kings and the goalie out, the Enforcers Dave 'Trees' Treloar
rifled one through a screen that hit the post and bounced into the
corner.
Game
4: Blackhawks 7 - Oil Kings 4.
The
Oil Kings didn't bother to show up for much of the first period as
they fell behind 4-0. Breck scored 2 goals to make it 4-2 in the
second before Al Belanger scored his third and fourth goals of the
game to widen the lead back to 6-2. Breck completed his
hat-trick, scoring in the final seconds of the second to make it 6-3
going into the third. The Oil Kings pressured but could not
close the gap. The Blackhawks scored again to mek it 7-3 before
Breck scored his fourth to make it 7-4. Brek had 4 goals for the
Oil Kings and Al belanger had 4 goals for the Blackhawks.
Game
5: Oil Kings 3 - Starmadilloes 2
The
Oil Kings and Starmadillos played a classic. The Oil Kings had 8
skaters against the Starmadilloes 3 lines. The Starmadilloes
jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first but they were shut down
the rest of the way by Timmy and the Oil Kings D. The Kings
scored 2 in the second to make it 2-2 going into the third. Jeff
Cashill blasted a cannon past the Starmadillows goalie Big Bob to make
it 3-2 Oil Kings with 6 minutes left and the Oil Kings held on for
their third 1 goal win of the season.
Game
6: Oil Kings 4 - Lazers 3
Playing
with out any of their bug guns, the Oil Kings ground out a very
blue-collar 4-3 win over the Lazers. Although they had 11
skaters, the Lazers were also without some of their big guns.
The Lazers scored early to take a 2-0 lead after 1. The Lazers
were awarded a penalty shot in the second on a questionable call by
Mark The Ref but Timmy made the save. The Oil Kings came out
fired up after that and rang up 4 straight goals to take a 4-2 lead
into the third. The Lazers made it 4-3 early in the third when a
shot from the point deflected of an Oil King D-man's skate and went
through Timmy's legs. The Oil Kings dug deep and held off
the furious Lazer counter-attack to hold on to their fourth one goal
win.

PREVIOUS SEASON STORIES
|
| GAME 2 |
| The second game of the season saw the Oil Kings take on the Cavepunks
and the Great Gazoo in a rough and tumble affair. The first period
ended scoreless as neither side could muster too many quality scorring
chances. The Kings took a 1-0 lead early in the second before the
Cavepunks tied it at 1-1. The game was chippy and rough with both sides taking runs at each other but for some reason, the Great Gazoo only called penalties on the Oil Kings. Halfway through the second period Millice was called for roughing for defending himself after one of the Cavepunks threw a tire-iron at him. However, the Great Gazoo only called Millice and this was the 12th straight call against the Oil Kings. Wayne told the Great Gazoo nicely that there were 2 teams out there after which the Great Gazoo gave Wayne 10 for yapping. Wayne nicely asked the ref to reconsider so the Ref gave him another 10 and a game at which point Wayne politely asked the ref to join him in the parking lot for a beer. The Great Gazoo then tacked on a match penalty and a gross as Wayne hurled his stick at the glass as he was being escorted from the ice. After play resumed, the Oil Kings killed off the penalties to Wayne (plus 19 more before the ref called one on the Cavepunks). The Kings scored another goal to take a 2-1 lead after 2. After having their fill of butt-ramming the Oil Kings, the Refs decided to take turns pounding on the asses of the Cavepunks in the third. The Oil Kings used the man-advantages to take a 3-1 lead before the Cavedouchebags closed it to 3-2. More powerplays later, the Oil Kings added another goal to round the scoring off at 4-2. With 30 seconds left, Breck "The Hammer" Young and some smelly bastard from the Cavepunks went at it with Breck scoring a TKO as the refs stopped the fight after Breck landed 16 rights in a row to the smelly guy's kisser. After the game Breck commented that the guy smelled like dirty pussy and he'd have to wash his equipment now after it was in contact with the dirty, scummy, smelly, skanky slob.

| GAME 3 |
| Game 3 saw the Oil Kings take on the defending champion Lazers.
The Lazers broke out all the big names and big guns looking for an
old-fashioned-style grudge match with the Oil Kings. The Oil Kings
took the ice with 7 skaters to the Lazers 5 lines. The start of
the game was delayed as the ref pussied out and went home to drink warm milk and watch Steel Magnolias before going to bed. Until the ref from the 9:00 game on the other rink could come over, the Oil Kings and Lazers were to play with no refs and play 20 minute running time periods. The first period was played pretty fairly and evenly as neither side took advatage of the lack of refs. Several big saves by Tim, including reaching back and pulling one off the goal line just as it was going in, and goals by Robbie Hill and Tush staked the Oil Kings to a 2-1 lead. The second period started off as 20 minutes running time and the Lazers tied it at 2 just as the Ref came on the ice with about 17 minutes showing on the clock. The ref, for some reason, did not reset the clock time. As a result, the game featured a 20 minute stop time second period. The Lazers poured it on and much of the second was played in the Oil Kings end. Wave after wave of shot came but only 1 more of the Lazers 25 second period shots got by Tim and the second period ended 3-2 Lazers. The 20 minute second left the gas tanks of the Oil King skaters nearing empty as the third period started. Somehow, someway, the 7 Oil Kings players (Robbie Hill, Ryan, Dan, Tush, Ed, Rob Yorke and Dennis) dug deep and found a way to skate with the Lazers 5 lines in the third and even put on some pressure. Halfway through the third, the Lazers scored to make it 4-2 but 2 minutes later, Dan scored for the Oil Kings to close it to 4-3. The Oil Kings pressed for the tying goal but were not able to get another. The Lazers added 2 more insurance goals in the last 2 minutes to make it 6-3 and that's how it ended. Tim, with 45 saves on 51 shots, was the star of the game as he kept the Oil Kings in it until the end. |
| GAME 4 |
| The Oil Kings were defeated 6-1 by the Starmadillos last Sunday night.
In a fast paced and well played game, the speed of the Starmadillos
forwards and the often-times spectacular goaltending by the Starmadillos
goaltender Big Bob proved too much for the Oil Kings to overcome.
Despite numerous scoring chances and open nets, the Oil Kings could not
get one past Big Bob until late in the third period by which time the outcome had already been decided. The Starmadillos took a 2-0 lead in the first period on 2 goals by Dale "Church" Elder and they extended that lead to 4-0 after 2 with Dale completing his hat-trick going 5 hole on Tim for the fourth Starmadillo goal. The Starmadillos added 2 more in the third to make it 6-0 before the Oil Kings Breck Young (I think) banged home a rebound to end Big Bob's shutout bid. The Oil Kings are off to Vegas next weekend to compete in the Vegas Tournament before returning to Sunday League action on March 18th against the Blackhawks.
|
| GAME 5 |
|
The
Oil Kings farted one out 2 weeks ago, blowing wind on 2 leads and
allowing the Blackhawks to escape with a 6-4 victory. As
happened with the game against the Lazers in week3, there were no
referee's at game time and most of the first period was played without
a referee. In the wide-open first period, the Oil Kings scored 3
straight goals to erase a 1-0 deficit and take a 3-1 lead after 1.
In the second period, the Oil Kings had a number of great chances to
extend their lead but Eddie Rice came up with big save after big save
in goal for the Blackhawks. The Blackhawks got a pair of goals,
one of them on the power play, to tie the game at 3 after 2. The
Oil Kings came out flying in the third and scored to take a 4-3 lead
with 10:49 left in the game. The Blackhawks refused to give up
and they tied the game on a powerplay goal with 6 minutes left.
One minute later, the Blackhawks tooka 5-4 lead when a pass across the
front of the goal deflected off an Oil Kings stick and rolled into the
goal. The Oil Kings pulled the goalie with 1:20 left but the
Blackhawks added an empty netter to close out the scoring.

GAME 6
The Houston Oil Kings survived a scare from the Enforcers Sunday night and skated off with a 7-4 victory to even their record at .500 with 3 wins and 3 losses at the midway point of the Spring season. Sundays game saw the "official" return of Wayne "The Gazoober" Millice from his exile after threatening the ref with various unnatural sexual acts back in the third week of the season.
The
first period was almost all Enforcers as they out-worked and
out-played the Oil Kings and pinned them in their own end. The
Enforcers took a 1-0 lead 5 minutes into the game on a rebound goal
off a deflection of a shot from the point. The Oil Kings battled
back and Rob Hill tied it at 1 with a quick wrist shot right along the
ice that found the inside of the far post and went in. The
first period ended tied at 1-1.
In the
second period, the game see-sawed back and forth as each side tried to
exert control. The Enforcers took a 2-1 lead about 6 minutes
into the second as Gary Donnan fed a nice pass to Danny O'Sullivan,
whose second shot went top shelf for the goal after his first shot was
blocked. The Oil Kings pressed for the tying goal. The
line of Tush-Hill-Young was flying around the offensive zone and
getting a lot of shots but they were mostly outside shots and the
Enforcers goaltender was doing a nice job of cutting off the angle and
making the saves. With 4:22 left in the second, the ref
had his arm up for a delayed penalty call on the Enforcers so the Oil
Kings pulled Timmy out for the extra-attacker and Rob Hill cut into
the slot and fired a nice shot past the Enforcers goalie to tie the
game at 2. From that point on, the roof fell in on the
Enforcers. Less than 30 seconds later Breck "Nuts"
Young fired a beautiful rocket from the top of the face-off circle
that went right under the cross bar to make it 3-2 Oil Kings.
Less than a minute later, on the ensuing rush after Timmy stoned one
of the Enforcers with a nice pad save, Reid Warriner fired home a
rebound through a maze of players to make it 4-2 Oil Kings. The
Enforcers' Gary Donnan scored through a screen with a minute left in
the second to close the score to 4-3 after 2.
Third
period was all Oil Kings. Rob Hill completed his hat-trick with
a nice "now-you-see-it, now-you-don't" move on a breakaway
to make it 5-3 Oil Kings. "Nuts" Young fired another
missile top-shelf to make it 6-3 Oil Kings. Jeff Cashill used a
nice toe-drag move to skate through 3 Enforcers before he passed it to
Dan Hutt who was robbed by the Enforcers goaltender. Even
Millice hit the net with a shot! The Enforcers scored to make it
6-4 with just under 2 minutes left in the game. The Oil Kings,
who let one slip away last week, were not about to do it twice.
They clamped down on the Enforcers, Timmy made a couple of nice saves
at the end as the Enforcers were pressing, and Dan Hutt banged in a
rebound with 5 seconds left to make it 7-4 which is how it ended.

Lightning
Strikes Oil Kings 8-5
The
Oil Kings record dropped to 3-4 last Sunday as they were fried by the
quick strking Lightning 8-5. The Lightning were lead by Mitch
Nyveen and Surfer Dave Treloar who both notched up hat tricks.
The Oil Kings dominated the first period taking a 3-0 lead after 1.
The lead evaporated in one shift in the second period as Surfer Dave
scored twice and Mitch once to tie the game at 3. The Lightnings
Mitch and Dave added another goal each to extend the Lightning's lead
to 5-3 after 2. The Oil Kings battled back in the third
but were just not able to close the gap. They made it 5-4 with
10 minutes to play and shortly after the Lighning scored to make it
6-4. The Oil Kings made it 6-5 before Mitch completed his hat
trick with 2 minutes left scoring a power play goal to make it 7-5
Lightning. The Lightning added an empty net goal to seal the win
at 8-5.
Oil
Kings Over Starmadildos 6-5
The
Houston Oil Kings pulled their record back to .500 but almost blew the
game by pulling their puds in the third period but they held on for a
6-5 victory over the Starmadildos. The win evened the Oil Kings
record at 4-4 with 4 games to play in the Sunday League season.
The
Oil Kings dominated the first and second periods at both ends of the
ice and were comfortably in front 4-1 after the second period.
In the third period, the Starmadilloes turned it on just as the Oil
Kings were in the process of checking out for the remainder of the
game. With 2 quick goals in the first 5 minutes of the third,
the Starmadildos closed the gap to 4-3 and looked on the verge of
pulling even. The Oil Kings quickly woke up and resumed playing
with the intensity of the first 2 periods. This resulted in 2
more Oil Kings goals that extended their lead to 6-3 with about 5
minutes to play. As time wore down, it looked like the Oil Kings
were going to coast to an easy win but, as we all know, there are no
easy wins. The Starmadildos roared back and were flying around
the Oil Kings zone. As always happens when one team in flying
and the other is standing, the Oil Kings had to resort to hooking and
holding to slow down the Starmadildos attack. This resulted in a
steady stream of Oil Kings players going into the penalty box.
The Starmadildos slammed home 2 powerplay goals in the waning minutes
to close the score to 6-5 but they were unable to get the tying goal
with the goalie out for the extra attacker and the Oil Kings
shorthanded and the Oil Kings skated off with a 6-5 win.
Oil
Kings drop pants to Blackhawks
The
Oil Kings blew a 3 goal third period lead to drop a tough one to the
Blackhawks who scored the winning goal with 20 seconds left in the
game. The loss left the Oil Kings record at 4-5 for the season.
Oil
Kings over Lazers 3-2
The
Houston Oil Kings pulled their record back to .500 by not pulling
their puds in the third period and holding on to a 3-2 victory over
the Lazers. The win evened the Oil Kings record at 5-5 with 2
more games to play in the Sunday League season.
In a
fast-paced first period, the Oil Kings and Lazers went up and down the
ice with good scoring chances at each end being thwarted by solid
defense and goaltending. The Oil Kings took a 1-0 lead on a goal
by Jeff "Money Shot" Cashill as he banged in a loose puck as
the Lazers were in the process of mishandling it. With 7 seconds
left in the period, Jeff "Scott Stevens" Cashill caught Wes
"Big Game" Timura cutting across center ice with his head
down and laid a nice, clean, solid hit on Wes that left him writhing
on the ice making snow angels. To shouts of "Get up you
fucking pussy", Wes was helped off the ice and play resumed.
In the
second period, the Oil Kings played down to the undermanned and tired
Lazers level, giving up numerous breakaways and odd man rushes to the
Lazers. Thanks to some solid goaltending and defensive work by
the Oil Kings D-men, the Oil Kings escaped from the second period with
the score tied 1-1. In the third period, the Oil Kings turned up
the heat and took a 2-1 lead on a nice goal by Breck "Hand
Job" Young. After several roughing penalties called on both
sides, the Lazers were left with 5 guys on the ice, 2 guys in the
penalty box and no subs on the bench. The Oil Kings then
resorted to a "tire-them-out" strategy by not playing
defense and hoping the Lazers wore themselves out skating around the
Oil Kings zone. The strategy worked but no before the Lazers
tied the game a 2-2. Minutes later, Ryan rang one in off the
cross-bar to restore the Oil Kings lead at 3-2. A penalty with
4:00 left in the game gave the Lazers a power play and a chance to tie
but the Oil Kings penalty killers were huge, limiting the Lazers to
just 1 shot on net during the powerplay. The Lazers pulled their
goalie for an extra attacker but the Oil Kings shut them down as time
ran out. All in all, it was a well played and hard fought 3-2
victory for the Oil Kings with the first star going to the Oil Kings
Defense for outstanding play all game.
